That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles

There’s be no shortage of traffic to my databases recently – gotta love Google. I’m not sure what people are looking for exactly, but I see lots of people browsing the data, but do not get many requests for more information like I used to. And because of that, I decided to let my Ancestry.com subscription lapse. Three-hundred dollars for one year of access is a lot – especially when I have no money coming in from doing research or other ventures.

This site gets anywhere from 40-60 people looking at stuff per day. I’ve always been happy with that since I felt that would lead people to contact me for some other information. What I think has happened is that more and more people are able to find their genealogy online – either done by somebody else or places to look themselves.

I’m not sure what that means for my site, but I will keep my database updated as I add new stuff to it, but there haven’t been many new updates lately and unless I do a bunch of data entry, I wouldn’t expect the site to change much.

If you land on this site and have questions, let me know. If you find information on this site that is useful, great, but let me know – just so I don’t feel like I’m wasting my time. For those of you who have shared data with me and/or emails, thanks a lot. It’s been great helping you get your genealogy researched.

Doing Some Changing

I’ve done a redesign (yet again) of the site. All the genealogy databases were untouched by this. I did add a Webtrees database for fun. It is a fork of the phpGedView program.

I also added a Google custom search on the front page as well as a nice way to share my posts (when I finally write some). If anyone wants a Google+ invite, let me know as I’m in the system now.

You’re Still Here?!?!?!

Contrary to how it may seem, I’m still around. Hard to say where they time has gone, but I’m here. I’ve got a few ideas in the works for web stuff and genealogy so I’m working on those. For now, however, not much has changed in my database. I do need to update it on the site as I have made some new changes.

Summertime Fun

The yearly question is upon me, once again: whether to re-up with Ancestry or not. I go through this every year. You see, when the weather gets nice around the country, people spend much more time outdoors – understandably. During this time, I have very little research to conduct other than my own – which is fine. Once the weather turns cold and wintry, then I get more requests for help.

So, I guess I answered my own question and will renew with Ancestry again this year just so I can help those who need it when they need it this winter. It just feels wrong doing it in August when I’m not using their services much. Oh well, the price (and a steep one, thanks Ancestry) we pay.

On a side note, I had done some tinkering with the sidebar area of the site a few weeks ago in order to make it easier to navigate my Saurette and Oligny information. In doing so, I nuke the social bookmarks that were there. Today, I added Twitter and Facebook plugins that will appear on every post. Please take the time to retweet and recommend via FB. I’m always look for new traffic to Saurette.com!
