Searchable (sort of) Drouin

The Drouin records that are over at Ancestry.com are now indexed – kind of. It is not a perfect system, but it works remarkably well if you know what you are looking for. The past couple days, I have found new information on people in my direct lineage that I thought I would never find since I can’t spend weeks reading old French records on the computer.

I’m in the process of updating my local database to reflect the changes and new additions. For those people who have their own pages on this site, I have tried to update those as I go.

Some advice to those people who are whining and complaining about the quality of the index on Ancestry for the Drouin records: knock it off. The index is just another tool in the genealogist’s toolbox. It is not meant to do your research for you. If all you know is the name, then you are going to be greatly disappointed. If you have names, dates and/or places, then it is a great tool for verifying information or uncovering new information. I have read too many people complaining about how they can’t find what they are looking for. Well, maybe dig into the records themselves, or at least come armed with more information than my great-great-grandfather Joseph so-and-so was born in Quebec. Yeah, good luck with that one.

New database will be uploaded soon.

Plugging Away

I have uploaded yet another revised database today. I have done some clean up work with the data and some more verifications with the Drouin images at Ancestry.com.

On the site, itself, you will find an expanded Drouin area that has been updated today. I added a bunch of images on the Saurette side and a couple on the Oligny side. I’m gonna take a break on that for today, but it has been nice to get some new material uploaded. As always, feel free to drop a note to me.

Working Hard

It may not seem like it, but I have been working very hard on the genealogy – perhaps not overtly on the pages of this site, but in the database itself. I have been combing thru the Drouin records at Ancestry.com to find dates, places, etc. for births and deaths. I have been uploading the database every few days to reflect the changes I have found. I will also have to re-run all the descendant reports I have on this site as well – to better reflect the work I have done.

If anyone out there wants me to look up something in the Drouin – just drop me an email, srock@saurette.com, and I will do my best.

NEHGS in Boston

Wow. It has been a long time since I have posted anything of note here. The wife and I were gone all of last week. We were in Boston for a conference. While there, I had the opportunity to visit the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Happily, it was within easy walking distance from where we were staying. I had my ancester report all printed out and ready to go, but I really didn’t know what information I was going to look for.

The building that the society is in is pretty neat. It is six stories tall and old looking on the outside. I was very impressed by the number of books and other things that they had in their collection. The main thing I decided to look at were vital records for Quebec church parishes. A lot of information that I am lacking is death dates for my ancestors in the 1800s. This ended up being a good thing/bad thing kind of thing. 🙂 Continue reading NEHGS in Boston
